Archimedes - the Greek genius
Latin "Noli turbare circulos meos!"|
translated "Do not disturb my circles!"
Archimedes - when he was killed
Archimedes - 287 BC - 212 BC|
born in Syracuse Sicily - Magna Graecia
studied in Alexandria, Egypt
Archimedes of Syracuse was a Greek mathematician,
physicist, engineer, inventor, and astronomer,
one of the leading scientists in classical antiquity.
He was born in Syracuse and lived there
A Roman soldier killed him on a street of Syracuse
Imagine ~2300 years ago:|
Archimedes has written about the heliocentric theory of the solar system,
he published contemporary ideas about the size of the Earth
and the distance between various celestial bodies...

Famous outcry of Archimedes
when he found a solution
to a scientific problem
A hollow pipe and, a screw like cylindrical shaft inside
The work to turn the screw can be done by man, animal or a windmill, water mill, or as in most well-pumps by electricity.
As the shaft turns, the bottom end scoops up a volume of water. This water will slide up in the spiral tube, until it finally pours out from the top of the tube and feeds higher level canal or pipe
Archimedes' principle of buoyancy made him famous and a favorite of his king.|
The king wanted to know, if his golden crown was really pure gold. He asked Archimedes to prove or disprove without damaging the crown.
Archimedes could prove that any body wholly or partially immersed in a fluid experiences an upthrust equal to, but opposite in sense to, the weight of the fluid displaced.
He weighed the crown, and asked to give him a piece of gold with the same weight. He put both items on a scale, above the water the scale showed equal weight, but when submerged, the scale showed that the piece of gold was heavier.
Archimedes conclusion: The crown was not made of pure gold ...
The pulley system was invented by Archimedes|
A combined pulley makes life easier as the effort needed to lift the load is less than half the weight of the load.
The main advantage of this pulley is that the amount of effort is less than half of the load.
The main disadvantage is it travels a very long distance and will take a much longer time.
A movable pulley is a pulley that moves with the load. The movable
pulley allows the effort to be less than the weight of the load.|
The movable pulley also acts as a second class lever. The load is between the fulcrum and the effort.
The main disadvantage of a movable pulley is that you have to pull or push the pulley up or down.
The main advantage of a movable pulley is that you use less effort to pull the load.
A fixed pulley is the only pulley that when used individually, uses
more effort than the load to lift the load from the ground.|
The fixed pulley when attached to an unmovable object e.g. a ceiling or wall, acts as a first class lever with the fulcrum being located at the axis but with a minor change, the bar becomes a rope.
The advantage of the fixed pulley is that you do not have to pull or push the pulley up and down. The disadvantage is that you have to apply more effort than the load.
A better easier life made possible by the thoughts and work of Archimedes who has lived 2300 years ago!
Archimedes had asked to put a sphere and a cylinder on his grave|
In his opinion it was one of his
brightest moments when he could prove
that the volume and surface area
of the sphere are two thirds that
of the cylinder including its bases
Missing education is the most pervasive threat to the Earth today.|
We have tried to give you a little glimpse of one of the greatest scientists living on Earth.
Many bright minds were born after Archimedes, but his inventions still change our daily life.
