of the United States
When Jefferson was young he practiced law and served in local government as a magistrate, county lieutenant, and member of the House of Burgesses. As a member of the Continental Congress, he was chosen in 1776 to draft the Declaration of Independence, Having inherited a considerable landed estate and slaves from his father, Jefferson began building Monticello when he was twenty-six years old. Three years later, he married Martha Wayles Skelton. In their happy ten year marriages they had six children, but only two survived. After the death of his wife Jefferson never remarried.
Thomas Jefferson worked with helping to ratify the Constitution through the writing
of essys in the "Federalist".
His ideas influenced the US Bill of Rights.
Jefferson public service included being Benjamin Franklin's successor as minister.
1790 he became secretary of state under his friend George Washington.
1796, he became vice-president after losing to John Adams. 1801, he defeated Adams and became president. In his first term he supported the purchase of the Louisiana Territory, helped Lewis and Clark with their expedition to the West.
After his second term as president Jefferson was happy to see his friend James Madison as the new US president.
