Ocean currents

Ocean currents change life on Earth! Earth's ocean currents move ocean water around the globe. Different forces are causing this flow: Salinity Wind Temperature Waves Coriolis force Tides Different ocean depth Different shoreline depth You can see there are a lot of influences that cause ocean current's direction and strength, flowing great distances. Often these ocean currents are called global conveyor belt. The climate of all countries is changed by these warm and cold watter flows. Look at all these different currents: The Hawaiian Islands current is the reason for a sub-tropical climate there. The California Current is changed by the Kuroshio current, a strong western boundary current in the western north Pacific Ocean. The Humboldt current is responsible for the largest fisheries on Earth along the West coast of South America. The most important to Earth is the Gulf Stream, which makes northwest Europe much more temperate than any other region at the same latitude. The Gulf stream started a long time ago, when Panama rose up and closed the gap between North and South America. The Kuroschi current begins off the east coast of Taiwan. Moving Northeast along Japan, merging with the North Pacific Current, moving towards the US-West coast, changing climate and temperatures there.
